More Road Closures – the Highway to shut for Tour de France

Tour de FranceWe have just been sent the email below from TfL notifying us that the Highway is going to be shut yet again, this time for the Tour de France. We know that fellow Wapping residents are getting pretty frustrated by the number of events being held that block access to Wapping and modify crucial bus routes. It is something Cllr Emma Jones raised with Tower Hamlets only a few weeks ago.

Local campaigner, Julia Dockerill, has also responded to the Tour de France notice. Her email is also below.

Subject: Information from TfL regarding Tour de France – Monday 7 July

Dear Stakeholder,

As you may know, the Tour de France is coming to London on Monday 7 July.

The roads which form the event route will be closed to traffic on the day and, as the route passes through your constituency, I am writing to let you know that Transport for London (TfL) will be contacting residents and businesses this week to help them plan ahead. The letter and map attached will be delivered on the 27 March to all properties within 400m of the route, plus other significantly affected areas.

From the 27 March, a map of the full route in London will be available at tfl.gov.uk/tourdefrance. We will be regularly updating this web page with the latest information, and we will be contacting residents and businesses again in June with more detail about the traffic management changes needed on the day.

In the meantime, if you have any queries about the event or transport impacts on the day, please let us know.

Best wishes

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email yesterday regarding the Tour de France and the plans to close certain routes to traffic on that day.

I’d like to register my concern that Wapping is once again being totally cut off. I live just off Wapping Lane and know there is growing frustration amongst fellow residents over the frequency with which the Highway is being used for events. I think everyone accepts disruption for the marathon, which is a long-running London tradition. But we now have regular closures for cycling and triathlons.

Wapping is uniquely cut off during these events because of its geography, as your map demonstrates. Perhaps consideration might be given to placing part of the route along Cable Street for some of the less profile events being planned, since that would still allow Wapping residents to access the roads in our area and residents in and around Cable Street would have alternative options for accessing their homes.

I should be grateful if my views could be taken into account as part of the stakeholder review.

Many thanks,

Julia
