Road Closures Keep Cutting Us Off!

highwayI know how irritated Wapping residents get when our village gets cut off by events which utilise the Highway. I again complained to TfL and suggested that on some occasions, they use Cable Street since we’re uniquely cut off when the Highway is closed.

I received the reply below. They are going to get back to me…! I also asked for a list of forthcoming road closures and it seems that only the marathon is so far pencilled in for the Highway next year – 26 April 2015.

Dear Councillor Dockerill,

Thank you for your email.

We appreciate that residents and businesses in Wapping will face access and travel difficulties due to the road closures that you highlighted in your email. I am awaiting clarification from the Transport for London (TfL) technical team in order to answer your query regarding Cable Street.

I can assure you that we are working closely with the boroughs, who were consulted on the route and are involved in all aspects of the planning process, to ensure that disruption to the public is kept to a minimum.  Please be assured that the detailed traffic plans include designated pedestrian crossing points, which will be controlled by marshals, to allow people to cross the route safely. Pedestrian access will be available throughout the day and local access for vehicles will be facilitated, where possible, within the road closure times. Access for on-call emergency vehicles will be permitted at all times.

I would also like to stress that roads will reopen as soon as it safe to do so after the event has finished.  An extensive communications campaign has been underway, including a series of public information sessions in the affected areas,  to provide residents and businesses an opportunity to ask questions and plan ahead.

As requested please find attached the Travel Demand Management (TDM) Events Calendar from Transport for London. It lists events which are likely to have a significant impact on the local or regional road and/or Tube and rail networks in London.

The information supplied is correct to best of our knowledge, and lists key upcoming events requiring additional communications to our customers.  However it is always advisable to check the venue/event organiser’s website for the latest information. I hope you will find it useful.

Thank you again for your email and once I receive information from my technical team I will respond fully regarding Cable Street.
