John Orwell Centre – Bushes Being Cleared

P1060878A few people have been in touch after noticing that the bushes behind the John Orwell Centre were being cleared. ‘What was Tower Hamlets up to?’, everyone wondered.

I’ve asked and have just received the response below. Nothing sinister is going on, it seems, but I’ve taken Lisa up on her kind offer to meet and will be visiting the centre in a couple of weeks’ time to learn more about their plans for the future.

Dear Councillor Dockerill

Members Enquiry Reference Number 1-90700119 Re: John Orwell Sports Centre

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding the John Orwell Sports Centre.

Works have recently been undertaken to cut back overgrown foliage along the centre fenceline in advance of the improvements being made to the centre over the next year.

The Council is currently in the process of preparing the site for the resurfacing of the astro-turf pitch and other ancillary improvements such as fencing, which is due to take place in 2015.

The shrubbery at the centre is overgrown and the decision was taken to remove the excess foliage to facilitate ease of access for maintenance, prevent any potential damage to fencing due to the overgrowth and improve the look and feel of the centre.

Paul Whiteman, is the GLL Partnership Manager that has overall responsibility for the John Orwell Sports Centre site and I would be happy to facilitate a meeting at a time of your convenience. Please let me know when you would like to visit the centre and I will make the appropriate arrangements.

I hope that this answers your query but if you have any further questions then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Lisa Pottinger
