Crossrail and the Overground

Crossrail is one of the most exciting things happening in London right now and will bring huge transport benefits to us here in Wapping. However a few residents have expressed worry that the works at Whitechapel might lead to an extended closure of the Overground, affecting services from our own local station in Wapping. Worry not! Julia got in touch with Crossrail this week and it seems there are no such plans. Crossrail tries to coincide its works around planned TfL engineering works when the Overground would be closed anyway (all correspondence below).

In the meantime, for London/railway/history/tunnel geeks, some pictures below from Julia’s most recent visits to Crossrail works.  The first batch are of the tunnels between Moorgate and Liverpool St, the second from the new tunnels at Tottenham Court Road.

Dear Julia,

There are occasional weekend closures at Whitechapel Station to allow particular Crossrail works to go ahead. These tend to coincide with weekends when the London Overground would be closed in the area anyway to allow Transport for London engineering works to go ahead. These occasional weekend closures are likely to continue throughout the Crossrail works but there are no Crossrail related plans for any longer closures to Whitechapel Station or the London Overground as a whole.

Best regards

Julia,

Thank you for your email.

My colleague Richard, who works in our Community Relations team, should be able to help with your enquiry.

All the best,

Adam

MOVING LONDON FORWARD

Dear Adam,

Some Wapping residents have mentioned to me their concern at the possibility of Crossrail works disrupting the Overground train service at Whitechapel (which is two stops away from us) when the new parts of the station and new services are integrated. I’d be most grateful if you could ask the relevant Crossrail colleague whether the Overground will ever have to shut, if only for brief periods, to allow for works at Whitechapel to go ahead or whether the Overground service remains entirely unaffected.

Hope all’s well with you and your team!

Many thanks,

Julia
