Thames Police Boat Station

Established to reduce the amount of pilfering of cargo at the docks and looting of ships, a Marine Police Office has existed in Wapping since 1798. That makes the Marine Police Force (or Thames River Police) the oldest police force in England. From their site on Wapping High Street, the river police patrolled the Thames day and night. The Metropolitan Police’s marine unit still operates from the site but now also occupies a distinctive blue and white building opposite the Il Bordello restaurant. The unit is responsible for patrolling forty-seven miles of the Thames between Dartford and Hampton Court.
