Stairs and Beaches

DSCN5186

One of Wapping’s greatest attractions is the old stairs that lead the curious down little alleyways and onto the beaches of the Thames. When the tide is out, you can climb down onto the river’s shore and pick a path around the capital’s flotsam and jetsam, uncovering shards of old pottery amongst the modern day litter of London. The Pelican Stairs by the Prospect of Whitby lead the visitor to a hangman’s noose which stands today as a reminder of the area’s grisly past when pirates were hanged for their crimes and left as a warning to other thieves and ne’er-do-wells.
