Blitz History

The tower of St John’s in Scandrett Street is all that remains of the beautiful eighteenth century church that stood in Wapping before the Blitz of the Second World War when London was blasted by a sustained, strategic bombing campaign. Wapping was a prime target for the Luftwaffe because of its commercial docks and warehouses. An elegant and simple sculpture of a dove in flight now sits in the Hermitage Memorial Gardens as a tribute to the East Londoners who were killed or injured during this troubled time in Wapping’s history.
