Tobacco Dock

To the north of the ward lies Tobacco Dock, a Grade I listed warehouse built in 1811 to store tobacco. The warehouse was vast, capable of storing 24,000 hogsheads, and its high walls were designed to be impenetrable to prevent theft. In the 1990s, ambitious plans were put forward to make the empty Tobacco Dock the ‘Covent Garden of the East’. A huge car park was built and a selection of mainstream shops and outlets moved into the premises. But the shoppers did not follow and the venture soon became commercially unviable.

Tobacco Dock now hosts regular events and exhibitions and even housed the troops that were drafted in to help with the 2012 Olympics.
