Pierhead Conservation Area

The Wapping Pierhead Conservation Area was designated in July 1969 and extended in 2008. It incorporates the smart Georgian terraces and nineteenth century warehouses of the pierhead area as well as Wapping Underground station, and is intended to protect the unique qualities of an area that combines a wealth of residential, ecclesiastical, commercial and industrial premises connected to the redundant London Docks.

The pierhead once served as the main maritime entrance of the London Docks, with ships and their cargo passing between the houses of wealthy merchants, customs officers and officials. In the 1960s, that entrance was filled in and now stands as a private garden square for those lucky enough to occupy these glorious Georgian buildings.
